FAQs About Pricing & Estimates
What to expect when it comes to cost, quotes, and how Capstone Electric charges for work.
Yes — we provide free estimates on quoted jobs. For larger projects such as panel upgrades, new construction electrical, remodels, and commercial work, we’ll come out, assess the scope, and provide you with a detailed written estimate before any work begins. For smaller service calls and repairs, we charge an hourly rate and will give you a clear picture of expected costs before we start. Either way, there are no surprise invoices.
We offer both, depending on the nature of the work. Smaller service calls, repairs, and straightforward jobs are typically billed hourly. Larger or more defined projects — panel replacements, new construction electrical, lighting installations, and similar work — are typically quoted as a flat project price. When you contact us, we’ll determine which approach makes the most sense for your situation and be upfront about it before any work begins.
Yes, always. For quoted jobs, you’ll receive a detailed written estimate that outlines the scope of work and the cost before we schedule the job. We don’t start work without your approval, and we don’t add costs mid-job without discussing it with you first. If we encounter something unexpected during the work that affects the price — which occasionally happens, particularly in older Hill Country homes — we’ll stop, explain what we found, and get your go-ahead before proceeding.
Electrical work varies widely in complexity, and cost reflects that. Replacing a single outlet is a very different job from tracking down an intermittent fault in a circuit, rewiring a room, or upgrading a panel. Factors that affect cost include the type and scope of the work, the accessibility of the wiring, the age and condition of the existing electrical system, permit and inspection fees where applicable, and the materials required. We’ll give you a clear explanation of what’s involved and why before any work begins so the cost makes sense to you.
Yes. Capstone Electric offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor on all of our work. If something we installed or repaired fails within that period due to workmanship or materials, we’ll make it right. We stand behind the quality of every job we complete — and that commitment hasn’t changed in over 20 years of serving Central Texas.
FAQs for Homeowners
Common electrical questions from Central Texas homeowners — and straight answers from our team.
You should call a licensed electrician any time you notice: breakers that trip repeatedly under normal use, outlets or switches that are warm, discolored, or sparking, a burning or melting smell near your panel or anywhere in the home, flickering lights that aren’t caused by a loose bulb, outlets that have stopped working, or visible damage to wiring. You should also call before taking on any project that involves new wiring, panel work, or adding circuits — these are not DIY jobs. When in doubt, a quick call to Capstone Electric can help you determine whether something needs professional attention.
There’s no hard rule, but most electrical panels have a functional lifespan of 25 to 40 years. Age alone isn’t always the deciding factor — condition, brand, and capacity matter too. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are known to be problematic regardless of age and are worth replacing. A 100-amp panel in a home with modern electrical demands is often undersized regardless of its age. If your panel is more than 25 years old, has been showing signs of trouble, or your home has grown in size or electrical load since it was installed, it’s worth having it evaluated by a licensed electrician.
Extension cords are designed for temporary use, not as a permanent wiring solution. Using them long-term — especially for high-draw appliances — creates fire and shock hazards. If you find yourself relying on extension cords or power strips because you don’t have enough outlets where you need them, the right solution is to have an electrician add outlets or circuits in those locations. It’s a relatively straightforward job that eliminates the risk and the clutter of a cord-dependent setup.
Both are safety devices, but they protect against different hazards. A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against ground faults — situations where electrical current flows through an unintended path, often involving water or a person. GFCIs are required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and other wet or damp locations. An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against arc faults — dangerous sparking within the wiring that can ignite fires inside walls without any obvious outward sign. Current electrical code requires AFCI protection in most living areas of new construction. If your Hill Country home is older, it likely doesn’t have AFCI breakers, but they can be retrofitted for improved safety.
It depends on the scope of the work. In Texas, certain electrical jobs require a permit — panel replacements and service upgrades, new circuit installations, and significant wiring work all typically require permits and inspections. Smaller repairs like replacing an outlet or a switch generally do not. When Capstone Electric performs work that requires a permit, we handle the entire process — application, scheduling, and final inspection. You don’t need to manage that yourself. If you’re ever unsure whether a project requires a permit, ask us — we’ll give you a straight answer.
Start by checking your breaker panel for any tripped breakers — a tripped breaker will typically be in a middle position between on and off. Reset it by switching it fully off and then back on. Also check any GFCI outlets in the affected area — a tripped GFCI upstream can cut power to multiple outlets on the same circuit. If resetting breakers and GFCIs doesn’t restore power, or if the breaker trips again immediately, that’s a sign of an underlying problem that needs a licensed electrician. Don’t repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping — that’s the breaker doing its job, and forcing it can create a safety hazard.
