Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt household outlet — the same kind you’d plug a lamp into. It works, but it’s slow, typically adding only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. For most EV owners, that means plugging in overnight and still not waking up to a full charge if you drove any significant distance the day before. Level 2 charging operates on a 240-volt dedicated circuit — the same voltage as a dryer or range — and adds 20 to 30 miles of range per hour depending on your vehicle and charger. For the vast majority of EV owners, a Level 2 home charger is the practical, everyday solution. It’s what Capstone Electric installs.

Not always — but sometimes. A Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit, which draws meaningful capacity from your panel. If your panel is relatively modern and has available breaker slots and sufficient overall capacity, the installation is straightforward. If your panel is older, already heavily loaded, or undersized for your home’s current demands, we may recommend a panel upgrade alongside the charger installation. We assess your panel as part of every EV charger quote — so you’ll know exactly what’s needed before any work begins.

Most Level 2 chargers use the SAE J1772 connector standard, which is compatible with virtually every non-Tesla EV on the market. Tesla vehicles use a different connector but come with an adapter for J1772 chargers, and Tesla also sells its own Wall Connector that works on a standard 240-volt circuit. We can install most major brands of Level 2 charger — including ChargePoint, Enel X JuiceBox, Emporia, and others — as well as chargers supplied directly by your vehicle manufacturer. If you’re not sure which charger to purchase, we’re happy to offer guidance based on your vehicle and your usage patterns.

For most homeowners, the garage is the most practical location — it keeps the charger protected from the elements and puts it close to where the vehicle is parked. We can also install chargers on an exterior wall or a dedicated post if your parking situation calls for it. The best location depends on where your panel is, where you park, and how much wiring run is involved — all factors we’ll evaluate when we come out for an estimate. For commercial installations, we assess traffic flow, parking layout, and utility capacity to recommend the right number of stations and the best placement.

Yes. Installing a Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which is a permitted electrical job in Texas. Capstone Electric handles the permit application and inspection scheduling on every EV charger installation — you don’t have to manage that process yourself. If you’ve received a quote from someone who isn’t planning to pull a permit, that’s a red flag. An unpermitted electrical installation can create problems with your homeowner’s insurance and complicate a future home sale.
