Electrical Repair FAQs

Some warning signs should never be ignored — burning or melting smells near outlets or your panel, outlets or switches that are warm or discolored, breakers that trip repeatedly under normal use, or any visible scorching or sparking. These are indicators of a potentially dangerous situation and warrant a call to a licensed electrician right away. Other issues like a single dead outlet or a light that won’t turn on may be less urgent but still worth having checked — small electrical problems have a way of turning into bigger ones if left unaddressed.

A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job — protecting your home from an overloaded circuit. But a breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you something. The most common causes are a circuit that’s consistently overloaded (too many devices drawing power at once), a short circuit somewhere in the wiring, or a ground fault. It can also indicate a failing breaker that needs to be replaced. A licensed electrician can identify the root cause quickly and recommend the right fix — whether that’s redistributing the load, adding a circuit, or replacing the breaker.

Flickering lights can have several causes, ranging from minor to serious. A single flickering bulb is often just a loose bulb or a bulb that’s incompatible with a dimmer switch. Flickering across multiple lights or rooms can indicate a loose connection somewhere in the circuit, an overloaded circuit, or — in more serious cases — a problem with the service entrance wiring or utility connection. Widespread flickering that comes and goes is worth having a licensed electrician look at, as loose connections in particular can create fire hazards over time.

A dead outlet is usually caused by one of a few things: a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere upstream on the same circuit (check bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and exterior outlets for a tripped GFCI reset button), a tripped breaker, a loose wire connection at the outlet itself, or a failed outlet that needs to be replaced. If resetting nearby GFCIs and checking your breaker panel doesn’t solve it, it’s time to call an electrician. Attempting to open and rewire outlets yourself without proper training creates shock and fire risks.

The cost of electrical repair varies depending on what the problem is and what’s needed to fix it. Simple repairs — like replacing a failed outlet, resetting or replacing a breaker, or repairing a loose connection — are generally straightforward and affordable. More involved repairs, such as tracking down a fault in a circuit, replacing wiring, or addressing panel issues, will cost more depending on the scope. Capstone Electric provides honest, upfront pricing before any work begins — we’ll diagnose the problem, explain what we find, and give you a clear cost before we proceed.
